cacopia?

It's very comfortable to wear one of these My real name is Ollie Barder and the name Cacophanus comes from an Eddie Izzard sketch on the audio tape version of the Definite Article. The sketch is about the Carthaginians attack on Rome and a helpful Legionnaire, by the name of Cacophanus, proceeds to be loud and stupid (in relatively equal measure). Admittedly, the spelling is rather comical but I blame that on my dyslexia rather than being anything intentionally moronic (plus my semi-childlike understanding of Latin is also to blame most probably).

In the real world I work in the video games industry, pretty much making video games. I've been involved with the games industry for a fair few years now, both as press and as a developer. It's been a bit of a slog at times but ultimately rather rewarding.

I've also travelled quite a bit, four years ago I lived in Japan and initially taught English to very excitable schoolchildren. Japan being a lovely country, full of equally wonderful people and a national infrastructure that works (unlike Britain). The food was also exceptionally delicious too.

As for my interests, well I watch a lot of anime, read a fair bit of manga and play a lot of video games. I also love listening to the work of Sergei Rachmaninoff, Boards of Canada and pretty much all renaissance vocal composition (especially that of Thomas Tallis). In terms of literature, I have a special fondness for almost all of Ursula Le Guin's work. In terms of satire, I have an affinity to Bill Hicks' standup work. I also occasionally dabble in amateur photography.

Though my main fascination is that of Japanese mecha. I have a lot of artbooks, toys, model kits, video games and all manner of other paraphernalia. Admittedly, in terms of anime the mecha pantheon is mainly of interest due to its skillful characterisation and narrative pacing but it's important to clarify that the mecha themselves are very cool nonetheless.

Anyway, for those that are interested this is the fourth time the site has been re-jigged into action.
